Bathroom Exhaust Fan Sizing: Why the CFM on the Box Isn't What Reaches the Duct

Every fan is rated against a resistance most real installations exceed. Votatec sets out how to read the certified numbers instead.
CONCORD, ON, 2026-08-20 - Buy a 100 CFM bathroom exhaust fan and you won't get 100 CFM. That headline rating is measured at 0.1 inches of water gauge, a duct resistance that assumes a short, straight, smooth run. Real installations, with elbows, a length of flex, a roof cap and a backdraft damper, land closer to 0.25 in. w.g. At that resistance the same fans deliver noticeably less. The gap is public and checkable. ENERGY STAR's certified product register publishes airflow at both pressures for every qualified fan. Across Votatec's own certified models the drop runs 13 to 17 per cent:

Those are certified values, not marketing figures, and the same register carries them for competing brands. Anyone specifying a fan can look up the model and compare.
How should a bathroom exhaust fan be sized?
The common rule is one CFM per square foot of floor area for a bathroom up to about 100 square feet, with a floor of 50 CFM. Fixture-count methods add allowances per toilet, shower, tub and jetted tub, which is why larger or multi-fixture bathrooms move to 80, 90 or 100 CFM.
Apply the derating above before you choose, not after. A room that calculates to 80 CFM and gets an 80 CFM fan on a long duct run is being ventilated at roughly 66. Sizing up one step is usually the fix.
Sizing up too far isn't free, though. Manufacturer troubleshooting guidance lists excessive CFM as a cause of excessive noise, so the biggest fan available isn't the safe default. Match the room, then allow for the duct.
What actually makes a fan quiet?
Sones, and the scale is not intuitive. One sone is about the loudness of a running refrigerator. Half a sone is closer to rustling leaves. ENERGY STAR caps qualified bathroom and utility fans at 2.0 sones, and HVI's test standard doesn't certify below <0.3 sone, so any bare figure under that should be treated with suspicion.
Two things worth knowing. Published sone ratings apply at the rated airflow, so a multi-speed fan is quiet at its lowest setting and louder at its highest. And a duct problem shows up as noise before it shows up as poor ventilation, which means an unexpectedly loud fan is often an airflow diagnosis rather than a fan defect.
Which duct mistakes cost the most airflow?
Four recur, and all of them are avoidable at install time.
An elbow right at the discharge. Give the air room to develop before it turns. Manufacturer guidance commonly sets the first elbow at least 18 inches from the fan outlet.
Reducing the duct. A 4 inch discharge needs 4 inch duct. Necking it down to 3 inch adds resistance and noise together.
Reusing existing ductwork on a replacement. This is the big one, because most fan purchases are replacements. Old, crushed, undersized or partly disconnected duct means the new fan will not reach its rated airflow no matter what the box says. Inspect the run, don't assume it.
Treating a bathroom fan as a range hood. They're different appliances with different ratings. Bathroom fans aren't built for cooking grease or the temperatures above a stove.
A useful field check: a correctly sized and correctly ducted fan should clear the steam from a mirror within about 15 minutes of a shower. Holding tissue to the grille tells you almost nothing.
Does motor type matter?
For running cost, yes, and by a wide margin. Efficacy is measured in CFM per watt, and ENERGY STAR requires at least 2.8 CFM/W for fans up to 200 CFM. Conventional AC models sit close to that floor, typically 3.0 to 3.9 CFM/W. DC motor models certify far higher: Votatec's three-speed DC unit is certified at 9.6 CFM/W at 100 CFM and 13.7 CFM/W at its 50 CFM setting, roughly four times the AC equivalent at the same airflow. For a fan running on a humidistat or a timer several hours a day, that difference is the whole operating cost argument.
DC models also give one fan several airflow settings, which matters for distributors and contractors carrying stock. One box covers a powder room and a family bathroom.
