Material Basics

5052 is an Al-Mg alloy from the 5xxx series (UNS A95052). It cannot be strengthened by heat treatment; its mechanical performance comes from alloy composition and cold working. Common tempers include O, H32 and H34. With a density of 2.68 g/cm³, 5052 features outstanding corrosion resistance, good ductility, formability and weldability. When drafting drawings, do not simply mark “5052”. You need to specify the temper, material form and material certification, complying with ASTM B209/B209M standards.

CNC Machining Characteristics & Common Issues

5052 can be processed by 3‑5 axis milling, turning, drilling, tapping and multi-axis machining. However, its machinability is moderate. Due to high ductility, manufacturers often face built-up edge (BUE), long tangled chips, burrs and thin-wall distortion after clamping stress release. Sharp cutting tools, optimized cutting parameters, sufficient cooling & chip removal, custom fixturing and DFM design are required. Cutting parameters for 6061 aluminum cannot be directly applied to 5052.

Processes, Tolerances & Surface Finishes

  • 3 to 5-axis CNC is suitable for housings, brackets, panels and rotational parts. Thin-wall components need staged roughing, semi-finishing and finishing to minimize deformation.
  • Tolerances are not fixed values. They depend on part geometry and fixturing. Tighten tolerances only on critical functional features, following ISO 1101 for GD&T and ISO 2768 for general tolerances.
  • Available finishes: sandblasting, brushing, anodizing and powder coating. 5052 can be anodized, yet surface consistency is affected by base material quality and pre-treatment. Specify anodizing grade, color tolerance and masking requirements for cosmetic parts.

5052 vs 6061 Aluminum

5052 has better corrosion resistance, formability and weldability, yet it is harder to machine. 6061 can be heat-treated and offers superior machinability. Choose 5052 if corrosion resistance or bending is your priority. Pick 6061 for high structural strength and easier machining. Typical applications include electronic enclosures, marine components, industrial panels & brackets, and transportation parts.

Supplier Evaluation, Cost & Mass Production

Price alone should not decide your vendor. Focus on material traceability, DFM review capability, inspection equipment such as CMM, first article inspection (FAI), and batch consistency. Total manufacturing cost is determined by part complexity, wall thickness, tolerance requirements, post-treatment, order quantity and fixturing times. For low-volume orders, manufacturability is key. For mass production, custom jigs, stable machining programs and in-process inspections guarantee consistent quality across batches.

How to Prepare Your RFQ Package

A complete RFQ should include STEP 3D files and 2D engineering drawings, clearly stating alloy & temper, quantity, GD&T, surface roughness, post-processing, inspection requirements and material certificates to avoid miscommunication between buyer and manufacturer. This guide also answers frequently asked questions from international buyers and outlines the standardized workflow from drawing review to shipment.
