The outlook is supported by recovering air traffic, freight activity, airport investment, and the gradual development of lower-carbon aviation fuels.

Passenger Traffic Remains a Major Demand Driver

Commercial aviation accounts for a substantial share of jet fuel consumption in the United States. Rising leisure travel, business mobility, and international connectivity encourage airlines to increase flight frequencies and restore routes. Population growth in major metropolitan areas is also strengthening connections between large aviation hubs and smaller regional destinations.

Recent consumption patterns demonstrate how closely fuel demand follows commercial flight activity. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that jet fuel consumption grew rapidly as air travel recovered following the pandemic-related decline. Although the pace of recovery has moderated, continued passenger activity provides a stable foundation for fuel demand.

Large airports such as Atlanta, Dallas–Fort Worth, Denver, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, and New York JFK play an important role in this ecosystem. Their extensive domestic and international networks create consistent requirements for fuel storage, transportation, quality control, and aircraft refuelling services.

Refinery Operations Support Aviation Fuel Availability

The United States benefits from a large and technically advanced refining industry capable of supplying aviation fuels at scale. Refineries process crude oil into kerosene-based jet fuel that must meet strict performance and safety specifications for use in turbine-powered aircraft.

Jet fuel represented a record share of U.S. refinery output in 2024, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The change reflected comparatively strong aviation demand and refiners’ adjustments to evolving transportation-fuel consumption patterns.

Refinery location is particularly important because aviation fuel must be transported efficiently to airports through pipelines, storage terminals, trucks, and other distribution systems. Reliable infrastructure helps minimise supply interruptions and ensures that major hubs can maintain continuous operations during periods of high travel activity.

Air Cargo Strengthens Consumption Across Key Hubs

Air freight is another important contributor to U.S. jet fuel demand. Express delivery companies, e-commerce networks, pharmaceutical distributors, and manufacturers rely on aircraft to move urgent or high-value goods over long distances.

Cargo activity is concentrated around specialised hubs that support overnight sorting and rapid distribution. Unlike passenger operations, many freight flights operate during late-night hours and follow schedules designed around delivery commitments. This creates a distinct and relatively consistent source of aviation fuel consumption.

International trade also supports demand at airports that connect American businesses with suppliers and customers across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and other regions. Changes in industrial production, retail activity, and cross-border commerce can therefore influence fuel requirements within the cargo aviation segment.

Fleet Modernisation Is Improving Fuel Efficiency

U.S. airlines continue to replace older aircraft with newer models equipped with more efficient engines, lightweight materials, and improved aerodynamic designs. These developments reduce fuel consumption per passenger or tonne of cargo while helping carriers manage operating expenses.

Digital flight planning, predictive maintenance, route optimisation, and improved air traffic management also contribute to efficiency. Airlines can reduce unnecessary fuel burn by selecting better routes, limiting delays, managing aircraft weight, and shortening ground-idling periods.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel Is Becoming More Important

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is emerging as a strategic component of U.S. aviation policy. SAF can be produced from renewable or waste-derived materials and used within existing aircraft and fuel infrastructure when it meets applicable technical standards.

The U.S. Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge Roadmap seeks to reduce production costs, improve sustainability, and expand domestic supply. Its roadmap established objectives related to producing three billion gallons annually by 2030 and supporting projected aviation fuel requirements by 2050.

Government agencies, fuel producers, airports, agricultural organisations, and airlines are participating in efforts to establish supply chains for feedstock collection, fuel conversion, blending, transport, and distribution. These initiatives aim to reduce aviation emissions while supporting domestic energy security and strengthening the aviation fuel supply chain.

Despite this progress, conventional jet fuel is expected to remain the primary aviation energy source in the near term. SAF production capacity, availability, certification, infrastructure requirements, and cost competitiveness will influence the speed of adoption.

Price Volatility and Regulation Shape the Outlook

Jet fuel prices are closely connected to crude oil costs, refinery conditions, transportation expenses, and regional supply availability. Sudden price movements can significantly affect airline operating costs because fuel is one of the industry’s largest variable expenses.

Environmental requirements are also encouraging investment in efficient aircraft, improved operations, and alternative fuel pathways. At the same time, fuel suppliers must maintain rigorous safety and performance standards to ensure reliable aviation operations.

Future Outlook

U.S. aviation fuel demand is expected to develop alongside passenger travel, air cargo activity, refinery output, fleet modernisation, and emerging SAF production. Conventional fuel will continue supporting the country’s extensive aviation system, while lower-carbon alternatives are likely to represent a gradually increasing part of the supply mix.

The U.S. Jet Fuel growth forecast indicates steady expansion through 2032. However, the industry’s direction will depend on airline capacity, economic conditions, crude oil prices, efficiency improvements, environmental policies, and the commercial scalability of sustainable aviation fuel.
