As the Devas and Asuras are locked in a perpetual battle symbolizing the ever recurring war between good and evil, Mahisasura was looking to gain edge over the Devas by getting stronger. He started penance and hardship in the form of Tapasya of Lord Brahma. Finally Lord Brahma appeared and granted him a wish. Mahisasura asked for immortality where ‘no man or animal’ in the face of the earth can kill him. Brahma granted him that wish saying that a woman will be the end of him.Empowered by the blessing from Lord Brahma, Mahisasura let his reign of terror loose. He defeated Indra, the king of Gods and drove the Devas out of heaven.
Defeated and humiliated they went to Lord Vishnu. Consulting with Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva, the god of destruction, Lord Vishnu formulated the plan to create a female form to kill Mahisasura. Thus born Durga. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva combined all their powers together to give birth to Durga. Durga is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the daughter of Himavan, the lord of the mountains. She is the mother-goddess -- Shakti -- the power that runs the universe. All the Gods including Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva gave durga their weapons. Shiva gave her his trident, Brahma his Kamandal, Vishnu his discus, Indra his Vajra, Himalaya gems and a Lion to ride on.
